There really is only one reason not to wash women’s underwear in a washing machine. That is that they are more delicate and can get ruined, especially the bras that will get stretched, pulled, and twisted in the wash. But even then, they sell mesh bags to protect these delicates.

im not Chinese, just here out of curiousity, but i should say everyone where im from also thinks this way, men dont usually care enough but if a woman is in charge of laundry she will also wash the underwear of the man by hand. its not just for hygiene reasons, its largely because underwear is usually made from more delicate materials that can start to deteriorate much faster if theyre machine washed rather than handwashed.

It makes me sad and mad that such nonsense beliefs are still purported today.

Yeah my ex's mom was like this, when we moved in together I was like if I'm doing laundry then everything goes in together (assuming if there is something egregious like stains or blood then you pre-wash those by hand first), but if you wanna do it your mom's way (she used to wash his underwear, so spoiled lol) then you do your own laundry. im not Chinese, just here out of curiousity, but i should say everyone where im from also thinks this way, men dont usually care enough but if a woman is in charge of laundry she will also wash the underwear of the man by hand. its not just for hygiene reasons, its largely because underwear is usually made from more delicate materials that can start to deteriorate much faster if theyre machine washed rather than handwashed.

That said, at least she had some kind of 'scientific' answer to that. I saw a thread in a Singapore subreddit the other day and there were so many women who were taught they couldn't wash their underwear in the washing machine because of superstition and misogyny (because it was believed that washing women's underwear with men's underwear would cause the man's career to suffer). It makes me sad and mad that such nonsense beliefs are still purported today.

On one hand, I get it. Say someone has soiled themselves or leaves horrible skid marks or there’s a menstrual accident. That’s way better hand washed to make sure it’s actually clean vs “well it’s called a washer so it (and everything thing else it’s washed together with) is clean when it comes out.” If you care to think about it, you’re really placing a high level of trust in something that halfheartedly agitates your clothes.

I have lived with a Chinese woman for 35 years or so. I have learned that there are an infinite variety of Chinese superstitions and meaningless rituals. But I have never heard of requiring underwear to be hand washed. I assume the idea comes from when underwear was more delicate and washing machines were more destructive than they are now.

Yeah my ex's mom was like this, when we moved in together I was like if I'm doing laundry then everything goes in together (assuming if there is something egregious like stains or blood then you pre-wash those by hand first), but if you wanna do it your mom's way (she used to wash his underwear, so spoiled lol) then you do your own laundry. No complaints after that :)
