China has launched its first domestic open-source desktop operating system, which has been hailed as a software development breakthrough, amid Beijing’s technological stand-off with Washington.
On Wednesday, Kylinsoft, a subsidiary of state-owned China Electronics Corporation, unveiled the Linux-based OS known as OpenKylin 1.0. It was created by a community of about 4,000 developers and is currently being used by around 850,000 users, according to OpenKylin’s official website.

I'll have to give it a try. Ubuntu was good. I was very disappointed by Redhat's CentOS. Not up on user productivity in terms of interface. We're talking about browser not even having minimize buttons so you have to pull down a menu and sext something. A minimize widget has been available since the early days of Motif. Why doesn't Redhat support this?

Yes good idea, there needs to more competition in this since microsoft made a mess of their 'windows' program. What the world needs is many operating systems, they are not that complicated, in fact starting again is a great way of keeping the os small instead of developing it in an 'onion ring' style, it should be transparent so software developers can identify structural features not just their effects. Of course we need new software, but again the advantage is we can avoid all the bloatware redundant code and complicated algorithms that exist only to fix bugs that should not be there.

alci, I’m a huge fan of Linux Mint but I am unable to get our business software to operate under it, so I must settle for letting big brother snoop in my stuff if he pleases. I do run a file server that runs a version of Linux and we absolutely love how effective it is. If I had it my way, all of our systems would use Mint.

Once you use Linux, any distro, you don't go back. The internet we all use and love runs on Linux, not WIndows, not MacOS. Amazon runs on Linux. Personally i recommend Linux Mint or PopOS, flash it in a small pen drive and the installation is a breeze. I've been using Linux for many years and absolutely love it, better than Windows and better than MacOS too, it's getting good for gaming too, which used to be one of its flaws. Would love to try out one day the military-grade russian distro AstraLinux (there are other russian distros but this is THE one to try). I will certainly take a look at this chinese distro.

This could mean more OS programmes being designed by a multitude of countries with a computer tech following. We could see the market dominated by the US now change with other countries either using China's OS or creating their own. Poor Bill Gates is about to be rocked. I am supprised that Russia has not come up with their own version of Apple devises and OS, or is it that being in the west we do not hear about it.

It took China a very long time to make their own Linux flavor as there are already dozens of other Linux OS distributions and some have been running for over 25 years.

Even though I am no longer a computer nerd. I will try the already provided English version in OpenKylin (my simple Chinese skills are not good). So far, I was happy with Ubuntu but open to a new Linux system. Since USamerica is dead for me, I will probably shift from Lenovo to a Chinese laptop maker too.

NIXOS's concept is out of this world; Debian and its offspring are already very good but NIXOS is by a long shot the most robust and reliable Linux distro I have come across...
