Standard and Poor’s, the other big agency, slashed the US rating to AA+ way back in 2011, also over a previous debt ceiling showdown, something that has become ritual blackmail by the Republicans.
With the latest rating downgrade from Fitch, the US now pretty much joins the levels of its English-speaking “Five Eyes” close allies of Australia, Canada, New Zealand; they are, however, economically ahead of Britain.

Democratic decay has been years in the making and it is getting worse. The moral decay within the USA is almost out of control, one only has to look at what is happeneing inside the country. The political decay has been going on for 50yrs+ and is coming to a head which I believe will explode in 2024. Perhaps this is where liberalism has its limits. While the concept is attractive:- to give freedom to a person to express his/her thoughts because it is protected under your Consititution; to freely assemble even if it may be contrary to health advice; to give voice to a cause even if it may be defamatory to some others; to extrapolate the Second Amendment to bear arms, a condition peculiar to the conditions of the eighteenth century, when now you are in the 21st century and you have both the National Guards and a Federal Defence force; to form bodies that may be antithetical to the running of government, etc. But your system is now become dysfunctional because the two party-system does not encourage other party(ies) to come in to break up the intense partisanship that is extant and which renders the system paralysed!

Why does it always have to be about China? This is an article about the US and the troubles and tribulations it is currently and for sometime been facing. My comments are on western society and did not make a comparison against other societies such as China which you elude to. China has its own set of challenges. Any society needs to have a clear look at its own political failings and the outcome of that, that type of self-reflection is not happening much in the west and the USA certainly not while being distracted with its China obsession.

You are right that there are big domestic issues facing America but that doesn't mean foreign autocracy is not also one and ignoring its significance to America whether American or Chinese would be naive. It is by far the most unifying cause domestically and also among it foreign allies whether Asian or Western. Regardless whether the threat is from ideology, economics or disunity from within, it doesn't matter. Trouble in America is trouble for all.
