But none of that is good enough.

The locals have a lifetime to build up immunity to the little ecosystem of bacteria that inhabits the local water, and they’re usually surprised when it turns out that it’s given you a fever and diarrhea. If you are from a country without cold winters and you travel to a cold country, you will suddenly discover that a jacket is not enough to combat low temperatures. The meaning of graffiti can vary a lot. In North America it means the local gangs have marked their territory and you are in a potentially dangerous slum. In Europe it means that the locals haven’t bothered to renovate in a while, but it has little bearing on how dangerous the place is.
90% of the above is from personal observations having travelled to these places. I obviously haven’t conducted extensive research and quantified what I’ve said, so take with a grain of salt.

Seriously, if you are from a country like Brazil, arrive in a place like Paris and say to the officer in the port of entry that you are travelling on a small budget and you will be staying on a room that you booked through Airbnb, they are gonna laugh at your face and send you right back to where you came from. If you are from a poor country you must have the ticket to your home country already bought, no matter how much time you will be staying or if you have bought tickets to a third country. You must have everything planned, no changes. Some countries like Spain even require that Brazilians show proof that the plane tickets and hotel are not refundable.
A lot of people here get deluded by this backpacking thing written by Americans, Canadians and others. There is no such thing as “travelling internationally on a small budget”, if you are from a country like Brazil, especially to Europe. There are Brazilians who claim having travelled to Europe without spending much. Bullshit. When you finish reading their experience you find out their budget wasn't small at all. They probably have rich parents and think they have become poor just for finally leaving daddy's house.
