It’s a real, working country. Most of it’s put to work feeding people or producing something. Even all those vast, seemingly “empty” fields of wheat, soybean and corn: that’s actually an enormous factory. It’s frickin’ expensive. I’ve met people abroad who really want to visit the United States, but can’t, because it’s just so damned expensive. (Americans were living in a bubble of denial here before infation got out of control. The U.S. isn’t so expensive if you’ve made your money in U.S. dollars. To other people, it’s like it feels for Americans to visit Switzerland or Norway: [insert horrible screams] “why is this so expensive?! Marge? MARGE! This is ridiculous. The Swiss are screwing me!”
It’s not that you can’t ever visit an expensive place like the U.S. But when you get here, your itinerary is understandably limited.

The big, popular places aren’t automatically the coolest places to see in the U.S. I’ve heard people rave about parks like Yellowstone and Zion. Yeah, sorry, Zion and Yellowstone aren’t the coolest places to see in the American West. (Partly because there’s too many other people there.) I’m pretty sure that tourists who’ve come away with the best impressions of the United States are the ones who do what Americans are encouraged to do when we travel the world: get off the beaten path, get a little farther out from the dunghill of mass tourism.

Which begs the question: what did the Chinese who were disappointed in the United States do here? Where did they go? Did they just go to the Mall of America? Yeah, I can see why someone might find the Mall of America a major bummer. It’s a boring place. Did they explore the highways and byways of Arizona? If you’re disappointed in the scenery of Arizona, I can’t help you. You’re helpless, by definition.

Some of the most moving, interesting experiences I’ve had in America aren’t something I could have planned, anyway. Last night, I wandered up to the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, under a surprise meteor shower, and peered into the astronomer Percival Lowell’s mausoleum in the dark among the sound of mountain crickets: that’s not the kind of stuff that shows up on Buzzfeed’s list of “Great Things to Do in America.” Visting the Lowell Observatory itself might get onto the list, but the experience you have there: that’s largely up to you, or at least you have to bring something to the equation yourself.

The difference between tourists and travelers is that travelers help create their own experience. Travelers do some footwork in advance. They read books, non-fiction, poetry, they know something about art and geology and history in advane, and they bring that deeper knowledge with them to a place. Tourists are mostly lazy sheep waiting to be entertained and spoonfed. If a lazy tourist had a bad experience of a place… maybe it wasn’t the place at fault?

I imagine some homeless Americans enjoy talking with curious, open-minded Chinese tourists. Homeless people aren’t all crazy. Very few of them are evil.

Some Americans are racist and don’t give Chinese tourists a warm welcome. I think American racism is pretty exaggerated, but I do understand why tourists right off the plane don’t get in a car and go camp in a tent on the open range 50 miles of Boise. Personally, I think camping on the open range is one of the more amazing and underappreciated experiences you can have in America, but with all the sensationalist news headlines bashing the world with every ugly story out of the U.S., I understand why not every newcomer has the courage to wander out into the hinterlands.

Not all beauty is visual beauty, anyway. I say this as a photographer hugely aware of photography’s shortcomings in “capturing” beauty. Some of the most beautiful things in America, or anywhere in the world, won’t ever fit into your camera. Be grateful for that.

Allegations that “U.S. infrastructure sucks” are weird. I’m not saying there’s no room for improvement, but I’ve driven all over this country. My car made it there and back. The roads work. The worst roads tend to be in big Northern cities patting their backs about how wonderful and superior they are.

When you hype a country up like that, visitors are bound to be disappointed.
