Indian parents would prefer their daughter getting married in a rich family rather than a poor one.
Rich man (dark as well as fair one) + fair woman (rich as well as poor) = mostly fair children
Poor man (dark as well as fair one) + dark woman (rich as well as poor) = mostly dark children
Hence proved.

Its my assumption that a rich person would want a 'beautiful' spouse and be successful in obtaining one (owning to the wealth).
And in a country where beauty is almost always tied to fairness(pathetic as that is), fair(er) women end up marrying richer men and that results in fair(er) children who marry fair women and the trend sort of continues giving rise to a fair looking upper class.

Can't believe how many people are in denial. Go to any bank or corporate institute look at the skin tone of the manager and then the maid. 8 out of 10 times the manager will be lighter skinned while the maid darker skinned. They both stay in the same AC.
It's because India has a history of prejudice against dark skinned people. Consequently there is a higher proportion of lighter skin in the more prosperous higher castes, and more darker skin in working class lower caste. Neo nationalists will of course deny this.

Your observation is correct, it's mostly because they have access to better cosmetics, skin treatments, access to better everything.
Poor people or the less fortunate on the other hand have more focus on fulfilling their basic requirements than follow up with beauty regimens.
But let's not generalise this fact as we all must have observed that some people are blessed with physical fitness, beautiful skin and hair without doing anything, while some people, whatever they do cannot get the results they wish for.

When I visit my village (for some 2–3 days) and come back to city, there is a distinct design pattern that gets engraved in my body. The skin part that is covered by clothes is much lighter than the part which is not. It takes around a week for my skin to become uniform.
When I was doing my first startup, I had to travel a lot on Bike, during June summer heat of Rajasthan and Gujarat. I had done that exercise for some 2–3 months. But this time my skin didn’t have a pattern. Skin tone was uniform. But when I compared that with earlier photographs, skin was much darker in tone.
Just imagine, if a few days or months of exposure to Sun can do this to my skin, what should be the complexion of the skin of people who toil all their lives under the Sun.

That's absolutely not true. For example with a bird’s eye view, politicians, movie stars, cricketers, tennis stars and so on from the south of India are all with dark skin tone and very very Rich.
It's not China that you can generalize with that criteria, it's more to do with geographical location, the most important predictor of skin tone.
No wonder that in China people believe that westerners are rich just based on their lighter skin tone, no matter they are farmers from a random fishing village back there in France.

Rich men prefered to marry light skinned women. Most famillies prefered to get their attractive fair daughters married to rich men. Rich men can be dark , or fair. Indian men however have a obsession with fair skinned women. So a child born to a fair skinned mother , and dark father is likely to be fair skinned or in - between. Also poorer people have to work outside in the sun , and cannot afford skin lightening creams , or sunscreen. So they naturally get darker. Whereas rich children can stay in their houses , and buy sunscreen. So their skin is lighter.
