I've been reading a lot about income inequality in Singapore lately. It seems like a growing concern among young Singaporeans.

@lee1039
When I graduated in early '90s, it is still possible, with a good degree, to afford a private house and a car if you start from zero. Let's just say that it is impossible, or incredibly hard, to do so now.

@Funcentric
Good to see your channel still providing good content! I remember the darker days where Asian Boss was almost dying off. Good on you guys.

@dtanx8978
its misunderstood. Singapore is a wealthy country, but the people are not wealthy.

@Daelaron
We actually still have the same kind of issues here in Germany, which most people would say is a really rich country. The income gap can be pretty insane. Generational wealth and opportunities through your family's standing on the social ladder, or nepotism are absolutely a thing. It's not an easy thing to solve. Just getting richer on average as a country won't solve it. More social security nets are working pretty well but if not done right can also just have a bandaid effect instead. Minimum wages are very important. As well as then forbidding employers to hire cheap foreigners, or outsourcing their production to cheaper countries. Otherwise it'll just be a global domino effect of wealthy people hiring the cheapest worker, making the local worker go jobless in their field of expertise, and braindrain for the poorer country by taking their skilled workers away, as well as making your own native population poorer on the low end. If employers hire a foreigner they should always earn the exact same, and have the same insurance etc. as a native worker, and on the more extreme end, maybe even have the employer face a tariff for hiring from outside.

@shurakishi4707
Singapore is actually beginning to head towards how Japan is like. the young will not be able to afford to own housing in future (except BTO HDB flats - and even with the help of grants, this is still challenging).
Job opportunities are also declining. Time to employment post retrenchment is getting longer.
As much as how the world is envious of Singapore. The future in singapore is getting more and more uncertain. Here in sg, we are very intertwined with what's going on in the world. We do not have natural resources, and our markets are too small to make a difference in the regional economy.

@choonsengteo9694
Sounded okay. Questions and answer’s going round and round. They look well to do. No worries.

@zeytee
Whether rich or poor, it's important to live happily. We can only be the best version of ourselves when we are happy.

@thee_others
Find me a country that doesn't have the Rich vs Poor gap.

@LaiChingLeong-p6i
What i see as a very good sign is that although the young people interviewed looked very diverse, they speak in the same local accent!

@NickHau-t6j
These questions are so simple yet so difficult to answer... Having lived in both Malaysia and Sg, it almost feels like in sg, your life isnt actually yours
especially if youre in middle to lower income classes..
going out for drinks to socialise & network costs a BOMB for an average person in sg and eats up almost 1/10 of most average singaporean salary..

@skip2malou88
interesting perspective and i can see the the gap between what people know and don't know. It's like there is 2 sides but they all still come into conclusion it's not that bad lol. interesting.

@Henry871026
Singapore is a very good country but the very obvious problem is its density. You can feel the crowdedness when you go out of your own home. Everywhere is packed, parks , malls and offices.

@NorwoodGuernsey
I'm 54 and my wife and I are VERY worried about our future, gas and food prices rising daily. We have had our savings dwindle with the cost of living into the stratosphere, and we are finding it impossible to replace them. We can get by, but can't seem to get ahead. My condolences to anyone retiring in this crisis, 30 years nonstop just for a crooked system to take all you worked for.

@Fr.VeniceLAI
Indeed, used to work in a Singapore-based listed company for about few years, definitely working in Singapore and in order to secure a good salary job, a Master Level Degree would be required, preferable from among the top 120 International University ranking in the world and also specialized in the fields of engineering, finance/accounting, business management, Bio-sciences and also Medicine and Dentistry and not forgetting the highly sought after Nursing and Health-Care jobs etc. Otherwise, although jobs are indeed, plentiful in Singapore ... but without some sought-after qualifications and professional skilled-sets, salary scale not going to be high to afford to have a great-life in Singapore.

@shanwen88

Goodness, every country, every society has income gap inequality. It would stay this way ...... the world is never a fair one. That’s life.

@coldhart79
Its very expensive now. Be it living, eating out, normal meal average near sgd10.

@kkcc553
Guys be clear, this topic is about INCOME INEQUALITY, not about if food or public transportation is affordable. Food and transportation being "affordable" does not mean the absence of INCOME INEQUALITY.

@faealan5304
Govt allowing this happen to their own citizens is mindblowing .

@wilshen1992
Other than accommodation, Singapore is pretty affordable to live in. Hawker is generally very cheap. There's nowhere in 1st world country where u can find a full meal that is within 5 dollars.

@kkcc553
The guy wearing the blue and white shirt knows everything. He just decided to be tactful and not use the more direct words. Can tell he actually introspected on this topic before. Smart dude.

A few months, a financial survey was done for young Singaporeans below the age of 30, in particular, it targeted the Gen Zs. The youngsters were saying they are very savvy in terms of investment and want to retire by 30 to enjoy their life. In short, they feel financially secure. Fast forward, all their gifting doesn't seem to align with reality, does it?

@eve_sy3180
Even though there are new opportunities for the current generation, it does not mean that everyone can grab it. Back in the old days, they can buy a food at a lower price. But now the prices of food are soaring. The prices of rent in Singapore is on average $1000 per month at least. Plus now they are so many tech layoffs and other companies are willing to layoff which means some careers are not that secure as it seems. Back in the old days, everyone can have a secure job very easily.

@bensgoodeats1493
Some of the people are not understanding the question on income inequality in Singapore before answering . Singapore Gini coefficient is low compared to most developed countries

I'm Filipino and I think Singapore is a great country. Its a national model with good policies which other ASEAN states should emulate. Compare to pay and health care benefits SG is top tier.

@calvinchew7985
Currently, Singapore's median property price to median annual income is 13.7 for private property and 4.5 to 4.7 for public housing 20 Nov 2023 data you can google yourself duh

@ITSaPendragon
i lived in Singapore for 2 years working at a Australian owned bank one of the girls that worked with me family had 4 maids/cleaners/cooks in there household which i found wild as there family was no richer than mine

@AlanSmith88888
Income equality is an impossible task to tackle. The economics of the world dictates that asset prices rise over time. In many cases it has been rising very rapidly over the last few years. So if you don’t own any assets, you will find it increasingly difficult to catch up.

@khw2053
honestly it's quite a nice place lah, as long as you live a simple life and dont have any huge aspirations to get this car or that house. But who am I to talk, I don't even plan to have a family anyway so financial independence is definitely achievable for me

@zibobpompon5768
What a stupid world we live in ,everything is about money in this life ,simple things like having a house and buy food should not be unaffordable , life is not about performing all the time we need to build another model because all of these have no meaning .

@DonYang73
Housing remains affordable but it is also the expectations that have moved up. If your household of a husband and wife has only $10kpm income, dont buy a 5room flat. Problem is that people go all out to buy the biggest they think they can afford (when usually cannot) Reality also is that our money is worth a lot less today. Make your choices carefully. Good luck Singapore

@mysteryguitarhaziq
The people who are talking are doing fine those who are working almost 24/7 are the ones these questions should be asked. Scout them out.

@AttiliaDePaolo
I'm glad you made this video, it reminds me of my transformation from a nobody to good home, honest husband, $75k biweekly and a good daughter full of love❤️

@chlspnn1635
My ex boss married a Singaporean and everytime she came back to our country, she bought everything she could like menstrual pads, baby diapers, snacks, noodles, soaps and everything. They’re pretty wealthy tho.

@kelvinyeo2047
In the end it is disposable income. If lower income move up, the overall price will goes up and middle and higher income will too move up. Ideally it is keeping food and house affordable to everyone, everyone who are willing to work.

@hajoung2647
Singapore and Seoul face quite similar challenges for youth. Thank you for insightful opinions from youth.

@cheenangng4050
I think the producer have to be clear about income inequality and income gap. Inequality suggest that one is not getting what he or she is supposed to get.

@BraunRob
The right choice of an investment has always been a big problem for me I know picking a wrong investment will leave a big scar in the future

@kcchiew4247
My wife and me are young senior. We will move into our new 4 room bto that worth 320k. We are not wealthy, but I am confident both of us will live well in our golden years.

@tkuanay9752
I know that most people in SG dont like developing nations. If you have a mindset, and wants to start a business move to India or indonesia or other countries with huge market. Build your business and you will be a millionaire and even billionaire. Dont get stuck in SG. It is big world.

@letsspillsometea
Singaporean accent sounds like a Nigerian who grew up in Ghana

@wu7423
Singapore is fast becoming HK 2.0, and many people actually thought it's good and all, I mean sure it attracted a lot of FDI, but there's also downside to this, the high living cost. Singapore should rethink its strategy, it should instead adapt European's way of life, be Switzerland of Asia.

@raoplns
The difference between HDB and Condo living is getting more distinct and large. Most average employees can't afford to live in a Condo but good thing SG GOV provides them a decent living in HDB. With the gap in value of HDB and Condo is increasing, there will be two classes of people HDB dwellers and Condo dwellers...never was difference so high.

@bakchormee4102
The interest thing is everybody thinks that they are the average. Nobody thinks that they are lower or higher while clearly all these people are of different socio-economic background.

@jkohero
The interviewees are mostly from the same income range based on their responses. I don’t think the survey accurately reflects the current situation. In my opinion, income inequalities are prominent in developed cities, and Singapore is no exception. However, compared to other major cities I know, Singapore has relatively mild income inequality. People are generally still able to afford housing, with BTO flats starting from 300k for 3 room flats in OCR region. In general, the younger generation tends to live a more extravagant lifestyle rather than being content with living within their means.

@alvinmah6148
If people with different jobs and different working hours are getting the same salary, that would not be fair.
Problematic income inequality: Most people are struggling in poverty. Only the elites live in abundance.
Good income inequality: Most citizens are having abundance, zero / almost zero homelessness, opportunities for everyone to move up the social ladder. And having plenty of billionaires / multi millionaires to create job opportunities in the country

@scbchong6964
The real issue is singaporeans are selling their HDB public housing apartment to other singaporeans for a million dollars fat profit. Now who are the greedy ones?

@EvansRG78
It actually seems worse in Hong Kong right now. You can have a great education, high-paying job (lawyer, doctor, etc), but you'll never be able to afford a reasonable place in Hong Kong on that income alone. Not even a tiny one-bedroom. For the most part you either have to have rich family to help, or you have to live outside Hong Kong. Even the rent is astronomical there.

@StephanieRussell-lc8gq
Singapore is expensive only the rental and perhaps owning a car. Other than that, its still ok, its up to the choices u make. Compared to malaysia 1 bubble tea cost about 15rm. imagine making 2000RM per month. how to afford bubble tea. where as in SG, only $3.50. I think only the private housing and cost of owning a car in SG is expensive. other than that, still ok.

@wallyoo77
If you buy from Govt and not owners, public housing is very affordable.
What a lot of people complain about is wanting premium locations or private property.

@alfarolex7591
Education is the key to success even if you are poor. You cannot choose where or how you are born, but you can choose how you die.

@shaqisumari304
