Every time I've been shopping over Christmas I've noticed more and more the quality has either been just awful and not worth the price or they have shrunk the item to the point it's just not worth the price. So instead of cutting jobs, how about making your products actually competitive.

They want to absolutely batter everyone’s wallets with excessive Black Friday campaigns and aggressively advertise, then days later they’re cranking up the heat on getting cash in the till for Christmas - and trying to capitalise on Boxing Day sales. Although the Boxing Day sales craze seems to have waned in the last few years, I worked retail from 16 and during education, haven’t now in like 8 years but it’s fun to look at the trends now from what it was like then.
10 years ago January sales, Boxing Day were probably the big 2 of the year. I think Black Friday trumps that now, but in general I think the public are savvy to ‘sales’ and realise it’s all just a load of shit re-tagged to shift. Black Friday is probably the only decent sale of the year with actual discounts (maybe).
And to echo your point stealth rising prices is scum, I’ve got a bit of a photographic memory and can remember certain things in the shop when I do my weekly shop. Loads of items fluctuate every week some of them go up 40p and such, that’s without getting started on this big club card scam which seems to obviously be a stealthy way to increase the price when it comes off club card price.
On top of all of this every time I go to a physical store to get something, and I try as my first port of call cos I like the idea of supporting a local high street first over a big billion pound company or something. More often than not, they don’t have my size, it’s not in stock, lack of choices, and I often find customer service (50% of the time) leaves a lot to be desired. Why would you choose that over online?

Having £500 left over at the end of every month in 2025 is very different to what that looked like in 2005. Wages have not kept up with inflation in decades, and this recent bout of high inflation has eviscerated most people's purchasing power. All of that wealth isn't disappearing, it's being hoovered up by executives, shareholders, and the ultra rich.

I think it’s largely the Tories you want to blame here if you want to pin the majority of blame on a single entity. They had majority control of the government for more than a decade and left us in this state. Pinning any of the blame on a party that wasn’t in government until a few months ago is pretty ridiculous.

The only physical retailer I go to is when I buy food shopping. There isn’t a single shop on the high street I’d want to buy clothes or shoes in, I don’t think I’ve bought anything like that in a shop in maybe a decade or more
The high street is absolutely dead, online caters to specific styles etc, the high street is just bland cater to the lowest denominator crap. Crap chain restaurants, crap chain pubs, costas and Starbucks, no thanks peddling cheap garbage and charging through the nose for it
If I want anything I buy online, they need to massively change what town centres offer because they’re dead and there’s no reason for them in their current format.

Many stores are dingy, poorly laid out, and uninviting.
And the goods they are offering are either poor quality or frankly uninspiring. I've noticed every Christmas that we have less choice and there's no innovation or care in what is being sold.
Consumers, consciously or not, feel that the companies are putting the bare minimum into their goods and customer service. It feels perfunctory, 'give us your money and leave'.
And if that's the case, you might as well shop online, where its often cheaper and the choice is greater.

Thing is retail companies need to start cutting higher management to middle management jobs that are just over spending for pointless jobs. How many managers are out there who sit on their hands, how many job roles are made up for someone or handed out through nepotism? How many jobs have been 'delegated' to the minimum wage worker with no pay increase?

With the cost of living as it is, were they really surprised? A huge proportion of the population are deciding between heating and eating right now.
My family and I are in the fortunate enough circumstance to be able to afford to buy every other family member a gift if we wanted (though we'd definitely feel the hit), but we all decided we don't need random extra stuff and whatever stuff we may need we are all grown up enough to sort it out ourselves, so we did secret santa with a £10 limit and a lean towards using charity shops. That went for both mine and my wife's side of the family and as a couple we spent a total of £25 on Christmas gifts. This obviously ignores any extra or special food that would have cost more than a usual weekly shop. Should we feel compelled to consume more just because the high street is going to cry about it?

Shopping habits continue to move online, transportation into cities is more expensive and increasingly unreliable, rents and rates are unsustainably higher than those faced by online retailers, quality is getting worse, shops don't have as much of a sextion in these days and/or are priced higher, which feeds into people buying online. Effect is that stores cut staff or stores shut and then people complain that the city centre is dying or that it's been replaced with another charity shop/vape shop/bookies/cafe, etc.
This is more unique to the UK than say, continental europe (where going into the city is much of a social trip as it is shopping) and because city centre living there isn't met with the same level of derision as it is here (though that would help if the city centre living was better value, better quality and not as noisy at night). It doesn't fix it, but it means they've weathered this a lot better.
I don't know if likes of France, Germany, Netherlands, etc tax online retailers higher to subsidise rates for brick-and-mortar stores.

Clothes shopping is something I'd prefer to do in person (because even on the same brands, the fits are inconsistent, and having a wide foot also means I can't trust the shoe size either. Often, I fall into half sizes, and stores rarely stock half sizes higher than 10)... and yet because of all that I'm forced online for that sextion. Then I have to mess about buying multiple sizes, trying them on at home, hoping one fits good, and then send the rest back. All that could be avoided if stores could stock a decent menswear sextion here.

The more I read into things this country needs a massive structural reform in order to get the economy moving and I’m sorry to say it’s going to be painful for some.
But in a changing world some things must be done.

Prices for most things aren't the only issue. Staff numbers have been cut to the bone, and the staff left don't give a shit in the main, so service levels have plummeted.
The whole point of working retail is to provide a service, and the vast majority of these companies can't do that. Then they complain they aren't selling anything.
I've worked retail for over 20 years, and I moved into a different retail sector years ago, because high street retail has been gutted. It all became a relentless "chase Amazon prices" but completely forgot what made it work.
There's no winner in the race to the bottom.
