Chinese exports of electric vehicles are blowing past the sales from legacy carmakers, and even from Tesla.
But China is rapidly taking over markets of fuel-burning cars. In 2024, China exported an estimated 6.5 million gasoline-powered models. Insiders forecast growth of an additional 4 million exports by 2030.
The success of Chinese brands is especially striking in Mexico, where they already enjoy a 14% market share, while Chevrolet sales have dropped 17% in just two years.

In Western economic systems, brand narratives and symbolic meaning account for a disproportionately large share of perceived value, with consumers often paying premiums for storytelling, identity, and emotional resonance. By contrast, the Chinese market places greater emphasis on practical utility and functional return; even high-priced products are expected to justify their cost through enhanced features, performance, and clearly tangible use value. This divergence reflects a fundamental difference in consumer philosophy and economic logic, rather than an ideological divide.

@078percent4
@antwango Competition within China is fierce, with over 200 car brands. Those that can export are winners in the Chinese market (but many people outside China are unaware of them). Their cars are highly competitive in any country, allowing them to quickly cover the global market. You might think these are new brands that have only been around for 2-3 years, but in reality, they have been developing and competing in China for 10-20 years or more.
@davidlazarus67
How long do you think it will take Chinese brands to dominate the fleet market? Less than 5 years is my guess.
@cruzn4ever169
@davidlazarus67 I give it Less than a year, Americans are waking up to the cost, reliability, on All products "Made in China" @davidlazarus67 我觉得不到一年。
@艺文陈-y2b
@cruzn4ever169 The reliability of Chinese cars is actually very good. There's a program in China that tests the reliability of cars after 100,000 kilometers of use. Currently, the xiaomi SU7 is in first place; it didn't experience any malfunctions after 100,000 kilometers of use. The last place is currently held by the Tesla Model 3.
@richardrestall8592
@davidlazarus67 The fleet market has been the one steady income source for American brands over the past 5 years; they will fight, and the unxs who make these vehicles will fight, and politics will get ugly. I expect it might take longer than 5 years, which is one election cycle. I don't know who makes utility/service vehicles in China, but I expect all kinds of nonsense in the certification process.
@艺文陈-y2b
@davidlazarus67 What you can currently experience in China is that Chinese cars are already generations ahead of Western cars. I bought a Lincoln in the first half of 2023, and in the second half of that year, I realized my car was outdated.
@davidlazarus67
@艺文陈-y2b Yes that’s what I am seeing from Europe. I was aware that the Chinese people prefer the features of Chinese vehicles. With such a competitive domestic market they have to come out with new features to wow the public. Chinese brands here are wowing the European public and sales are up rapidly across the continent. Whereas western brands are falling in sales.
@艺文陈-y2b
@davidlazarus67 Chinese people used to really like VW and Toyota cars, but now the product gap is just too big. Western cars seem to have low comfort features, poor smart technology, and are far behind in battery technology, making them not a good choice . One more thing, the Lincoln dealership where I bought my car is now a BYD dealership. Lincoln has closed down in my city.
@davidlazarus67
@艺文陈-y2b Yes I have been hearing of struggling VW sales in China for the exact reasons you mentioned.
@fredtan1506
WESTERNERS KEEP CRITICIZING PRODUCTS MADE IN China, BUT YET, THEY KEEP BUYING THEM.
@davidlazarus67
@fredtan1506 It’s the western companies that set the specifications so low that are the fault. The Chinese manufacturers are only building to a price set by the western retailers.
@MarkoOrwellius
@davidlazarus67 Exactly. And all the loud mouth yanks, conveniently dont mention that.
@Dutchthink28nmisAdvanced
@MarkoOrwellius I have seen a few polls where 80% of Americans were unwilling to pay more than 10% for American made over imported goods. That's an embarrassing figure. And pretty much shows Americans want cheap goods.
@davidlazarus67
@mfcorp9608 It is not irrelevant. With Chinese car brands they are the ones determining what they want to sell and what to include. They are building their brand in those countries. Now while they have a dominant supply chain they are still able to undercut western brands at the same quality and specifications. That’s why they banned Huawei and ZTE from the US market. It would have exposed Apple as a laggard.
With goods that are ordered by Western retailers they build to a price set by the retailer. With Chinese brands the standards and prices are set by the Chinese brands. For example western car brands that operate from China have different ranges for the western markets and another for China. The Chinese versions are struggling to sell in China compared to the Chinese brands where the buyers wants features and gadgets. Even Tesla is regarded as bland in China, while in the USA it’s the leader, because they have no idea what else is out there.
@davidlazarus67
@Dutchthink28nmisAdvanced It’s more a symptom of the financial struggles of the vast majority of Americans. Nearly 70% are living paycheck to paycheck. That means little discretionary income for American products.
@davidlazarus67
@f @fredtan1506 I have realised that China has moved up the value chain and while its domestic brands were the first to challenge the big western brand, that’s now spreading across so many sectors. I watch a number of TV reviewers and I think it may be Chinese TV brands like Hisense and TCL that could be dominating TV markets. They are already dominating budget TV’s and this year they are becoming a threat to mid range TV’s. A few more years and even LG and Samsung will be chasing Chinese brands.
@cruzn4ever169
@davidlazarus67 Yes, from USA - I recently purchased a Hisense upright freezer - and COULDN'T be happier - Excellent product ❤
@ZweiZwolf
@davidlazarus67 LG and Samsung have very mediocre quality, at this point, I would always buy Chinese over Korean. Samsung TVs have crazy bloatware and spyware, so they're off my list.
@davidlazarus67
@ZweiZwolf LG did have a problem with AI being installed on TV’s and they had to back down. If the Chinese brands don’t follow the western bloatware then they could be my next TV.
@ZweiZwolf
@davidlazarus67 Even without "AI" on TVs, constant surveillance, phone home and growing bloat with Samsung is just nonsense.

As they did in before the 100% tariffs were put on by Canada, following on from the USA. 3% of market share. Not very much, but with a possible factory in the future.
@banksiasong
The US destroyed the Canadian market by applying the Trump Tariff on cars that were part of CUSMA. That’s 95,000 Canadian built cars a year gone! No auto industry left in Canada. Carney’s longer term plan would be to do some manufacturing of them in Canada, but that would be optimistic.
@davidlazarus67
@banksiasong if Carney acts quickly and makes it safe for Chinese car brands to take over the old Canadian car plants to make ICE and EV vehicles then he could retain the domestic car manufacturing jobs.
@ZweiZwolf
China is BACK in the Canadian market. In 2023, China exported 43,000 cars to Canada. Next year, it'll be 49,000 cars out of 1.9 million, so a whopping 2.5% spread across maybe half-dozen brands.

We visit regularly, mainly for the amazing Canton Fair! Every time there is a vast slew of new, always affordable, products, and public services, especially transport, are now almost futuristic, with many cities having rolled out self-driving mini-bus systems, which can be booked via a WeChat module. Lots of affordable, yet feature-rich point-of-care medical devices (my field), and even more capability for less price every time we visit. Last time my Dell laptop had an HD issue, and I was able to get it fully upgraded to SSD (and the ageing screen replaced) for AU $150 - a tiny fraction of the repair cost in Australia, where I would have been looking at over $1000.
@Bill1516
The problem is if it's just China doing the manufacturing the rest of the world loses out - if Germany were to lose say half of the 750k people directly making cars today it's economy would unravel and go into deep recession - the EU has sizable tariffs on Chinese cars today - if a couple more VW factories close down they will jack the tariffs up to keep the cars out. Another 100k lost jobs and they will riot in the streets.

@mirage2154
@mfcorp9608 , that may be true, but I'd like to remind you of the Song and the Ming dynasty, where we are the top GDP in the whole world and sailed, traded, and conducted diplomacy in Asia and middleeast(and through them the Europe), the whole world enjoyed what China has to offer, and there were no large regional conflict has occurred at time, let along world wide conflict. Asia and middleeast has mostly peaceful trade relations and conducted deplomacy amount ourself for a millenia before westrerner come. It was a painful mistake to make, not developing advanced weapons and ships for war and/or not knowing how barbaric a nation can be. But I hope we Asian wont repeat those mistakes.
@Dutchthink28nmisAdvanced

@antwango
LOL ALL done and dusted within what seems like 2 - 3 years!! From nothing to EVERYTHING! Its crazy!
@078percent4
@davidlazarus67
How long do you think it will take Chinese brands to dominate the fleet market? Less than 5 years is my guess.
@cruzn4ever169
@davidlazarus67 I give it Less than a year, Americans are waking up to the cost, reliability, on All products "Made in China" @davidlazarus67 我觉得不到一年。
@艺文陈-y2b
@richardrestall8592
@艺文陈-y2b
@davidlazarus67 What you can currently experience in China is that Chinese cars are already generations ahead of Western cars. I bought a Lincoln in the first half of 2023, and in the second half of that year, I realized my car was outdated.
@davidlazarus67
@艺文陈-y2b
@davidlazarus67
@艺文陈-y2b Yes I have been hearing of struggling VW sales in China for the exact reasons you mentioned.
@fredtan1506
WESTERNERS KEEP CRITICIZING PRODUCTS MADE IN China, BUT YET, THEY KEEP BUYING THEM.
@davidlazarus67
@fredtan1506 It’s the western companies that set the specifications so low that are the fault. The Chinese manufacturers are only building to a price set by the western retailers.
@MarkoOrwellius
@davidlazarus67 Exactly. And all the loud mouth yanks, conveniently dont mention that.
@Dutchthink28nmisAdvanced
@MarkoOrwellius I have seen a few polls where 80% of Americans were unwilling to pay more than 10% for American made over imported goods. That's an embarrassing figure. And pretty much shows Americans want cheap goods.
@davidlazarus67
@davidlazarus67
@Dutchthink28nmisAdvanced It’s more a symptom of the financial struggles of the vast majority of Americans. Nearly 70% are living paycheck to paycheck. That means little discretionary income for American products.
@davidlazarus67
@cruzn4ever169
@davidlazarus67 Yes, from USA - I recently purchased a Hisense upright freezer - and COULDN'T be happier - Excellent product ❤
@ZweiZwolf
@davidlazarus67 LG and Samsung have very mediocre quality, at this point, I would always buy Chinese over Korean. Samsung TVs have crazy bloatware and spyware, so they're off my list.
@davidlazarus67
@ZweiZwolf LG did have a problem with AI being installed on TV’s and they had to back down. If the Chinese brands don’t follow the western bloatware then they could be my next TV.
@ZweiZwolf
@davidlazarus67 Even without "AI" on TVs, constant surveillance, phone home and growing bloat with Samsung is just nonsense.
@marilyngoldie5946
As they did in before the 100% tariffs were put on by Canada, following on from the USA. 3% of market share. Not very much, but with a possible factory in the future.
@banksiasong
@davidlazarus67
@banksiasong if Carney acts quickly and makes it safe for Chinese car brands to take over the old Canadian car plants to make ICE and EV vehicles then he could retain the domestic car manufacturing jobs.
@ZweiZwolf
China is BACK in the Canadian market. In 2023, China exported 43,000 cars to Canada. Next year, it'll be 49,000 cars out of 1.9 million, so a whopping 2.5% spread across maybe half-dozen brands.
@NormanMoffatt-t7k
China's manufacturing capacity is hard to comprehend, and I live here.
@phils4634
@Bill1516
@Lancaster786
Well done China, whilst the Westerners over throw governments, create wars, pillage the counties and put there own people in place, notice the difference !!!
@mfcorp9608
So basically what USA did while Britain was on top
@mirage2154
@Dutchthink28nmisAdvanced
@mirage2154 China has a very advanced military these days it's developing weapons at an unfathomable pace. Which these new innovations in many cases apply to civilian use. And more importantly the Chinese do not waste money and those weapons on war.
