Two disabled men in China, a blind man and a double arm amputee, have worked together for 13 years to plant trees. It's estimated that they've planted 10,000 healthy trees. The local government pays them an income for their efforts and the trees will help prevent flooding in their rural village.

Their story is very unique and virtuous. One said he'd go until his last breath. It also seems wildlife is returning where they plant. Very noble.

Chinese gov gave them Touching the Heart of China award. I don’t know how much they get paid. They signed a contract with village committee(vc). Vc will not charge any fee from them. They can keep all their income.

It's in the article. It says they get a small income from the government.

This is awesome! However, maybe they could maximize their efficiency if they switched jobs.

yeah, local govt should plant trees and the 2 disabled guys can pay them

With 220 working days per year, this means 3.5 trees per day. 1.75 tpp/d.

As a professional tree planter I average 10,000 trees every 4 days. I don't have any disabilities but still that seems an unusually low number to plant in 13 years. I suppose the size of the trees could be a lot bigger and without knowing how far the trees needed to be transported it's hard to judge. I'd be curious to see how their days are broken down.

Death_On_A_Stick
An article lixed farther down by u/RelativisticMissile states:
“It is a lengthy process which involves taking suitable cuttings from pre-existing trees, also planted by them, that have been growing over the last decade.”
If that helps.

Yeah that would be very labour intensive. Thanks for guiding me to that article. The article also mentioned that they have planted around 3000 trees that have not survived (which is quite a lot) If they had a proper greenhouse and rooting compounds they could probably increase their efficiency in both growing seedlings and planting them. But it sounds like they have almost no resources so that's quite a feat. Interestingly they seem to use cuttings of the trees they've already planted which means that they will all be genetically identical. In Canada we grow trees from seed so that the genetic diversity is preserved which also helps protects from disease.

I'm going to guess they dont have mechanized shovels (cant remember the name) and I'm going to guess they have to bring the saplings with a cart or something
That seems a low number but on that picture they seems like middle age+ so there's energy too

Thyriel81
They not only transport saplings, they first need to make them.

endertribe
That's relatively easy to do. You wait spring and then you dig the saplings (you plant them yourself but anyway)

That's how nature makes saplings, in forestry it's usually a bit different (grafted)

With modern greenhouses and techniques each seedling costs about $1 to grow (in BC, Canada). Reforestation companies bid on each contract, and depending on a number of factors, will bid what they think is feasible to do the job and still make a profit. The bids are all public and you can see some examples mentioned here: http://www.replant.ca/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?t=67309. Accessibility is a huge factor since logging roads are often impassable during the summer and some locations can only be reached by helicopter or Hagglund (a very cool tank like vehicle). Lets say that the reforestation company bid 87 cents per tree for this contract. This money goes mostly towards paying admin staff and camp infrastructure like ATV and truck maintenance etc. Even showering facilities for planters and food preperation (cooks and portable trailer kitchens, propane, gasoline generators etc etc.). We're in the middle of nowhere so we can't just go into town every time we get hungry.
After all that once the trees are dropped at the right location and the tree planters are ready to work, we make around 10-15 cents per tree. For my time tree planting it averaged to about 11.5 cents per tree but the prices have gone up recently. If you're willing to push your body to the limit it can be quite lucrative but it's definitely one of the hardest jobs out there. Back in the 70s it was equivalent to running a marathon per day and they were only planting about 1000 trees per day.

This is what all the iron fisted autocracy aims to accomplish, which imo is a good thing overall despite the obvious drawbacks.
China is the best managed country with 1.3b population, the only other one is India. And yes it’s a great time being middle class or rich in India, just like it is to be rich in China or really anywhere. But I’d rather be dead than be poor in India. 5 million children with genius level IQs living in slums. What a damn tragedy for human progress.

The_Assblaster
Yeah they don't have the benefits of hundreds of years of colonialism.
The modern Chinese state emerged in the the 50s. Prior to that the country was controlled by various warlords, bandits, and petty landlords. Everyone else was a sustenance farmer who didn't own the land the had to work their whole life. The country has transformed from that to one of the world's major superpowers in less than a century, and has lifted hundreds of millions of people out of poverty in the process.

13 years and 10,000 trees is... not a lot. Assuming they could plant as few as 10 trees a day, with an average work week of 5 days a week, they really should have easily been able to plant about 33,930 trees.
Side note: An able bodied team of two on the other hand can plant around 25 trees a day. Given the same work week for 13 years would make 84,825 trees. Just imagine what an investment toward a team of a million could do in the same amount of time! (84,825,000,000 is a lot of trees!)
