When I was looking for a place to stay in Japan at AirBnb, I was also checking some reviews there. The common reviews there would be “…this place has a nice view, the host is friendly etc.”. Not in Japan. Most of the reviews there were like “There was a lot of appliances available - hairdrier, toaster, kettle (…and the list goes on). However the room was supposed to be 4x5meters, but it was only 3.8x5 meters!”

Later, I also saw this in TAIWAN

Aside from the orderly Japanese section, the other one that amuses me is the section for combined Hong Kong and Macau and how the people from Hong Kong are visibly determined to ensure their own identity is maintained by sticking to the left.

@Zijian He
The relative overcrowding also mirrors the housing situation in HK. I actually never noticed till you mentioned this.

I was surprised to see how paranoid the Japanese are, while the Chinese are pretty much the same as us Americans.

Adrian’s point is that Hong Kong people does not like to be associated with being from Macau.

@Benjamin Lee
Nah, even if the other flag sharing the same box is other countries Hong Kong people wants to be associated with, most will just be very obedient and keep to the left of the box, because that is the way to show your own identity.

Well true, If there was a poll where my country and another similar country’s flag was in the same section, I'd stick on my own side even if I liked the other country a lot for no reason other than the fact that I’m obxtively from my own country haha. Still interesting to think about.

As a Malaysian which worked in both Germany & Japan, America for a while and of course my own country, i must say they are very systematic structured people when working as a team.
Other societies are a mess to get teams to work together. Chinese is the hardest to deal with followed by Americans.
As for my countrymen, we are just a bunch of idiots when compared to all.
Societies need to stop thinking in terms of me but more to us and for the good of all.
As for Malaysians, we still need alot of education and exposure.

What about the Axis during WW2. Japan and Germany allied together because they both thought they were superior races during WW2.

The Spanish, though not numerous, seem to give themselves plenty of space between the dots on the chart. I'd gather that they value their space.
This pattern seems to parallel their political sphere in the case that Spain is made of distinct autonomous communities and former kingdoms who try to maintain their space and legislative jurisdiction. In other words, a kingdom of kingdoms.
Perhaps I've over-psychoanalysed this but that is my take on the graph.

@Élise Petras
Now I’m psychoanalysing the countries’ scattered dots, looking for patterns… Canada attempted a grid towards the lower half of its section, Australia made a bird and I get the feeling China’s citizens are trying to create a character, given the matching ‘swoops’!

@Emile Foreste
Based on my experience and knowledge of Japanese people in general and looking at the photos, I would agree with Precision and add that they are all very uniform. Just look at how modest, kind, most of them are and the inclination to stay in order. Based on the stickers alone you can tell the Japanese are the most clean and in order, each person align their sticker with the rest as if socially keeping in order. Then you look at the stickers for other countries, to each their own self and a mess.
This is a generalisation but I’d say the way the Japanese place their stickers speaks a lot for their people’s inner qualities.
An addition to the “precision” quality, I remember reading a story here on Quora of how precise and on-time trains in Japan are, like they're not even a minute early or delayed.

@Chris Daniels
Interestingly, some of the orderly behaviour of the Japanese may come down to the so-called Rice Theory in which rice-growing societies are overly communal and collaborative contrasting with more individualistic wheat, barley and corn growing societies. In Japan’s case such behaviour may have become more pronounced due to the nation’s relative isolation.

Does this extend into perfectionism very often?

@AlexChang
Order?
No
If this place has a rule written on it: Please line up neatly
Then I admit that this is order
But this is not the case, there are no rules here.
They still do it, I think it is blind obedience
They are thinking: How can I do it? I don’t know, then it can’t be wrong to do the same as others!
This is a typical Japanese mentality. It is easy for the whole country to fall into extremism because of the wrong choices of a few people. This is very dangerous

@Timothy Takemoto
Yes. This is why things made in Japan are often well made. But it can lead to too much perfectionism and things being expensive.
