Thanks for asking.
Since I am a Chinese, I answer this question regarding Chinese. No, they didn’t use hands to eat rice. They used spoons. And this could be corroborated by archaeological evidence. I mean, there were spoons excavated from tombs buried in neolithic cultures in China. Here are two examples.

Here is a jade spoon made by people from in Lingjiatan Culture, or 凌家滩文化 (3800 BC-3300 BC) in Chinese.

Here is a jade spoon made by people from Liangzhu Culture, or 良渚文化 (3300 BC-2300 BC) in Chinese.

Before any tool was invented, people have to use hands to eat. This question seems trying to insult China and Chinese but today, most westerners are still using their hands to eat bread!

Dude, just because wooden spoons can't exist after thousands of years doesn't mean that all people used jade spoons at that time.

This show the advance of Chinese civilization and culture. Chinese have already invented so many things 5000 years ago.. So they are now capable of inventing on their own by just following the laws of Science n technology. It is unfair to say Chinese always spy and copy USA technology. This proves Chinese have brains too and human when they achieved something new and advanced.

5000年前,中国人已经发明了这么多东西;

Their rice were stickier so they rolled it into a ball, use a piece of seaweed and pop it into their mouths with their hands. Nothing difficult

Deyu Liu
is it that hard to find two sticks around? why it has to be formally invented rather than using a handy stuff and improve it over time?

I don’t know for the Koreans and Japanese, but the Chinese actually used forks and spoons before switching to chopsticks. In fact, the oldest historical records of people using forks actually come from China of all places lMao. Archaeological evidence of forks, spoons, and chopsticks in China date back to the Shang dynasty or earlier but chopsticks were originally a cooking utensil. Forks were gradually abandoned in favor of chopsticks but spoons were kept for soups.

Spoons. Before chopsticks, which are more able to do fine work, there were spoons.
Pieces of wood shaped to be used for eating date back to approximately 10 000 BCE. So eating with your hands is a choice. Tools for eating have existed for a very long time.
Before the chopstick (pair of chopsticks), a single piece of wood was used. It evolved into the ‘spoon’.
