Had the chance to drive a SU7 Pro (299 Ps, RWD, 95kwh LFP battery, ~$33,600) in Sichuan, China for a week. Mostly cruising on highway at 75 mph, I was constantly able to squeeze 400+ miles out of a single charge. The only thing I didn't like about the car was the CUPHOLDER that could hold nothing in place without a bit of aid.

confirmed! my home have alot xiaomi stuff and its all connected with my su7. i can check on my cat with the home cameras and give him food with the cat food dispenser. all while sitting in the car and just tell it what to do. in summer i use it to turn on AC before getting home.

The difference between Chinese EV automakers and legacy automakers is Chinese automakers are not focused on profits, but volume whereas the legacy automakers are focused on profits and low volume EVs. In order for legacy to "catch up" they would need to go several years with no profits as they invest in the technology and scaling, but no CEO is willing to eliminate profits on their watch.

I think the cost difference between Chinese cars and global automakers is just several factors rather than one big one. There's a UBS analysis of the COGS for the BYD Seal vs the Volkswagen ID.3 that's very enlightening. It seems like the biggest absolute cost differences are from China's advantage in batteries, car supply chain and distribution, and raw materials (steel?).

Chinese cars are not heavily subsidized. Do you really think the Chinese government can finance the largest car market in the world and exports? An accounting of BYD vs Tesla government funding suggest they are quite similar. What China has is a complete, tightly managed supply chain, lower cost of design and engineering, and a very competitive market. And, verses many US factories, a much higher level of automation - keep in mind Tesla Shanghai was where they got settled with local help and finally figured out manufacturing. Not all are losing money, the biggest player byd currently has around 25% gross profit which is the highest compare to other big automaker right now. Li also making alot of profit with each car average earn around 20k rmb, normally its those smaller automaker that are losing money

The dealers are not making much money but certainly not the manufacturers. The Chinese are way smarter in business than you think. If they are bad in business, the world won't be jumping everywhere they go.

I hope this humble us and begin to disabuse ourselves of the stereotypes around Chinese cars. Do not make the same mistake the past generation did with Japanese cars.
The future is becoming clear as we try to contend China. That is, the US will become a place with inferior products with high cost while China and the rest of the world enjoy superior products at lower cost. Hence, the quality of life in the US is about to decline. Homes prices are up, cars prices are up, electronics and other products prices are about to increase by 60% due to Trump tariffs.

Tesla Model 3 can only be categorized as compact vehicle if not sub-compact vehicle. However xiaomi SU7 is really a midsize vehicle lacking just additional trunk space to be categorized as full size sedan. So to be fair, xiaomi SU7 should be compared to Tesla Model S instead of Model 3. This is why people so amazed by the price of SU7.

It’s not to get political. But most people don’t get it when Trump has been talking about the tariffs and without it what it does to the local US economy. Most consumers would buy the cheaper imported Chinese vehicles if given the chance and then cars produced in the US won’t sell enough. And it’s not just American companies but other foreign companies who have factories in the US will not be able to turn enough profit to keep their factories open. So there will be loss of jobs and the economy will take a hit. It has actually been taking a hit in other sectors for years.

If you were xiaomi and you wanted to sell your car in the US but face 100% tariffs and then corporate tax decreases. It makes more sense to build a factory in the US, pay tax to the US government, employ large number of US based workers and have access to Canada, and the rest of the americas. The cars won’t be as cheap but they’ll be cheaper than with tariffs and competitively priced enough to give other companies in the US a competition whilst giving consumers options.

But you're not realizing is the Chinese are doing their usual thing and dumping product into the market. That's one of their core economic warfare concepts.
They are not making up the production cost differences simply on labor. These Chinese companies are not more efficient than Toyota. It all comes down to subsidies on the raw materials, power and real estate.

Thank you, Kyle, for doing this review of one of my dream cars to own. Yes, it's not perfect, but it's pretty damn close and quite an amazing feat for being xiaomi first attempt. Can't wait for more of your reviews with Chinese evs and i hope China rolls out the red carpet for you when you take a trip over there to review more cars. I would still expect you to be critical of any problems with each car but overall I think you might be throughly impressed and shocked by the affordability and features. What would I buy? $80k Dodge Daytona Ev or xiaomi Su7? Shout out to Wheelsboy and Inside China Auto for keeping me up-to-date on Chinese Evs.

Never mind that they've never worked long-term, and punishes the consumer. Ah real capitalism, oh how I miss you. Basically what's happened here is that the student (China) has outpaced the teacher (the US & EU) and we're clutching our pearls. Like your parents used to tell you, 'be careful for what you wish for'. Well the West wanted China to embrace capitalism and boy did they.

Come to the U.K. where we have no tariffs on Chinese EV’s and TBH you don’t see that many of the non SAIC/ MG brands or Geely/ Volvo Polestar or Smart and all of those brands have one thing in common - they are (wrongly) perceived to be European manufacturers. There are not thousands and thousands of Xomi’s , BYD’s or Nio cars taking over here so what are the American manufacturers worried about? We have a bigger problem with electric buses and coaches which are almost all BYD sub-brands (virtually any electric “London” bus or electric black cab you travel in is Chinese made and nobody bats an eyelid). The most popular Chinese made car by far here is of course a Tesla…………
