Japan’s agricultural minister, Shinjiro Koizumi, said on June 3, 2025, that the government was ready to offer more stockpiled rice directly to retailers as emergency-use grain was made available the week before. Long queues have formed at stores where customers are being limited to one bag of rice per sale. Rice prices have surged since the summer of 2024. Industry experts say supplies have fallen short of demand because of extreme heat related to climate change and recent speculation about an impending earthquake.

Have you seen Eendians queuing up with or without FOMO?

This is complete opposite from India/Indians. At the 8th Madhya Pradesh Global Investors Summit in Bhopal on February 24-25, 2025, a large crowd rushing to the food counter during lunchtime led to chaos and people scrambling for plates and pushing each other, like savages.

@OYT0724
Daaayum. Who would've thought Japan was going to suffer from food shortages? In the 90s they used to be the 2nd biggest market in the world. They had so much money and resources that they actually started to threaten American markets. What happened to Japan? That's what decades of failed government looks like. Nobody expected this.

@MrTobi013
It also didn't help that natural disasters often slapped the country more than once a year. Lands got all messed up, crops damaged and needing work that takes a long time to fix....and what you said.

Japanese : Why don't we import cheap rice from Thailand or Vietman ?
Japan goverment : I need the farmers's vote !

@MO_AIMUSIC
It's not even Farmers vote, if you're looking at data, Japanese Farmer become less and less, people going to Big City for a better job.

@kino9371
government better replan their farmer support system to attract young people who struggle in cities to return. I believe idea of calm village life works since most of them stuck into their homes and live isolated in big cities.

@MO_AIMUSIC
It is never an easy job. Japan has limited farmland, and even if it provided food at the world’s best level (which, sadly, Japan’s food standards are actually not higher than most of the world), it still wouldn’t make sense to aim for complete self-sufficiency. Moreover, it is impossible anywhere to suddenly become high-income just by being a farmer.
I strongly believe that instead of clinging to the idea of keeping farmers barely getting by, Japan should consider expanding global food supply channels, improving agricultural automation, and reducing the number of people who need to become farmers. Only by doing so can we make ends meet and truly solve the problem. Forcing people to become farmers by any means is futile.

@johnnypham2850
Japanese rice is unparalleled

@nurmuhammadwahyudi
forget about limited farmland, when about 400,000 hectare of farmland being unused and There some news about Farmer protesting about JA (Japanese Agriculture Association) for manipulation price for large profit being middleman
Basically agriculture economical system in Japan is broken and corrupt. It was useless talking about incentive, automation and innovation when the system doesn't work

@MO_AIMUSIC
It really depends on what cuisine you're making. Sushi, onigiri, and Japanese don usually use less oil, so Japanese rice is better for those dishes. However, for fried rice or Hainanese chicken, it is not quite suitable due to its stickiness.

@user-qm7jw
I'm Japanese, but I once tried Thai rice and it was awful. Incidentally, there was a rice shortage in Japan in the 90s, and at that time we imported a lot of rice from Thailand, but most of it was discarded because it didn't suit Japanese tastes. But yeah, I should try Vietnamese rice next

@quietwalker63
I think “scramble” is an improper word to describe how the Japanese behaved so well and so organized when they lined up for the rice.

i agree with other short grain rices in general, but basmati is long grain and non-sticky. It's not gonna go well with the dishes the japanese are used to.

You get variety of rice from India mostly Basmati produce in north India and you can also get thick rice, short grain rice and break rice (used in making kheer). You can get high priced rice to low priced rice, you can also get preboiled rice. Japan should mend the inner corrupt association because the rice peoblwm will occur continuously

@JasonB808
2000 for 5KG (about 11 pounds) of rice is expensive. Especially for that old lady who likely lives off pension or government assistance.
The people who selling it don’t actually care about the people. They profiting big off food intended for disaster relief.

@pbworld7858
And Japan slaps on a more than 700% tariff on imported rice. Basmati ends up similar in price, so you can imagine how much cheaper it is before it's taxed. Japanese consumers are being ripped off by their own country, especially when it comes to fruits. And also, this rice is about FOUR years old. It's been sitting there in warehouses. Normally it would be used as animal feed.

@nulnoh219
The problem is distribution. The government released the stockpiled rice to wholesalers and hope it trickles down instead of doing direct sales. If the Japanese government sells the rice directly to the people at the previous price point, the wholesalers have not choice but to lower their price to compete.

@Benny-tx5qd
The reason is that the monopoly protection agency has lost a lot of money in the bond market:
2024 Japan's Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries said on Wednesday that a panel of outside experts will investigate how bonds held by the Central Treasury of Agriculture and Forestry, Japan's largest agricultural bank, have accumulated huge paper losses.
The action was taken jointly by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries with the Financial Services Agency of Japan after the Central Treasury of Agriculture and Forestry warned that it could post a loss of 1.5 trillion yen (about $10.5 billion) in the current fiscal year due to the sale of unprofitable foreign bonds.

@exkurop
The key issue is Japan's agricultural cooperative, Nōkyō(JA). It's a powerful and massive monopoly that exploits both farmers and consumers. Farmers who don't comply can't sell their rice. They even consider the current high rice prices reasonable. When the government released reserve rice, Nōkyō monopolized the purchase of most of it and continued to hoard, leading to persistent shortages for consumers. Nōkyō is so deeply entrenched in Japan that politicians and media are afraid to challenge it. The same Japanese rice is sometimes sold overseas at prices lower than in Japan. It's absolutely crazy.

It comes down to farmers and wholesalers selling it abroad for a lot of money. It doesn't work like that because you are getting rid of food in your country and helping a hostile country so you end up with nothing to eat. Someone made a lot of money.

@TheBigExclusive
This was caused by 3 things:
1. Poor rice harvests in 2023 and 2024 due to bad weather
2. Massively increased demand for rice due to tourism from visitors in recent years.
3. Japanese government t reduced the amount of farmland for growing rice in order to build houses.
The government didn't properly anticipate increased rice demands or poor harvests happening multiple years in a row.
Japanese government has a rice reserve for situations like this, but they should fix the farmland issue going forward. It's better to have extra rice than not enough.

The issue that is causing this is not aging farmers or not enough farmers. Its because the government limits how much rice farmers are allowed to produce in order to artificially keep japanese rice prices high. Now they have an unforeseen bad harvest so they dont have enough supply. They have capacity to grow more if the government lets them.

@R0DSTER
from what i could briefly find, it seems that it's not so much an issue of refusing imported rice, it is more so government policy encouraging the reduction of land for rice that has led to this...seems that they purposely kept prices from going too low in order for big farms to not outprice smaller farms, by encouraging bigger farms to reduce rice growing. and now they're here

I’m surprised at your reaction, I live in Japan for 17 years.
