The thing is switzerland's electricity comes from 60% hydro and 30% nuclear (which is what's expected for a clean source of energy) and rest from renewable ones and other sources. India on the other hand produces electricity from coal for about 80% of it's usage.
Although the electrification of trains is a good thing, at the end the carbon footprint is more or less the same.

**Indian Railways aim to become 100% carbon neutral in 5 years.**
They already have 800MW of solar power and 100MW Wind. They will be purchasing power from solar powerplants to the tune of 3GW soon. plans for 500MW battery storage is underway to use this power at night and there is request for 3GW dedicated Nuclear reactors for railways. Hydrogen train prototype has already successfuly worked to replace the remaining diseal locomotives.

Random Swiss person who landed here, not having coal (or diesel for that matter) was the main reason we completely electrified our system. We imported the vast majority of it from Germany so electrification sort of became a matter of national security. During the world wars, there was a severe lack of coal and it was also seen as important that the system wasn't reliant on Germany so it wouldn't be possible for them to intentionally make the Swiss train system collapse just by cutting off the coal supply entirely (making a military invasion much easier). As such we started electrifying lines in order of strategic military importance and in WWII two conventional steam locomotives were actually converted into electric steam locomotives due to both a lack of coal as well as a lack of electric locomotives haha

Electrification makes sense when there’s enough traffic on that line. Wouldn’t make sense to electrify a line on which 1 train runs per day.
Japan in all likelihood isn’t “stuck at 64%”. They chose not to electrify beyond 64% because it doesn’t make financial sense.

Also 94% of China lives on less than 43% of the country so they chose to keep the long freight routes in the west diesel to save costs. The thing is switzerland's electricity comes from 60% hydro and 30% nuclear (which is what's expected for a clean source of energy) and rest from renewable ones and other sources. India on the other hand produces electricity from coal for about 80% of it's usage.
Although the electrification of trains is a good thing, at the end the carbon footprint is more or less the same.

**Indian Railways aim to become 100% carbon neutral in 5 years.**
They already have 800MW of solar power and 100MW Wind. They will be purchasing power from solar powerplants to the tune of 3GW soon. plans for 500MW battery storage is underway to use this power at night and there is request for 3GW dedicated Nuclear reactors for railways. Hydrogen train prototype has already successfuly worked to replace the remaining diseal locomotives.

Random Swiss person who landed here, not having coal (or diesel for that matter) was the main reason we completely electrified our system. We imported the vast majority of it from Germany so electrification sort of became a matter of national security. During the world wars, there was a severe lack of coal and it was also seen as important that the system wasn't reliant on Germany so it wouldn't be possible for them to intentionally make the Swiss train system collapse just by cutting off the coal supply entirely (making a military invasion much easier). As such we started electrifying lines in order of strategic military importance and in WWII two conventional steam locomotives were actually converted into electric steam locomotives due to both a lack of coal as well as a lack of electric locomotives haha

Im guessing it's because they barely have any passenger trains(excluding intercity metros), most of them are cargo ones and privately owned so to them I think it won't make sense to electrify rails or deploy faster trains unless it increases their profits which im not sure if it will

I don't think most countries care about the "electrification" of trains anymore. They are directly moving towards maglev and India is still decades behind. China has not only built its own bullet trains, it also gave bullet trains to smaller countries.

quality isn't just bad, it's actually getting worse with the number of general coaches being reduced and freeloaders in reserved coaches exploding. horrible sanitation only getting worse, no improvement in average running speed, no improvement in punctuality, ticket prices seeing sharp increases.

This is definitely something to be proud of, but I’ll take the comparison with other countries with a pinch of salt.
Electrification makes sense when there’s enough traffic on that line. Wouldn’t make sense to electrify a line on which 1 train runs per day.
Japan in all likelihood isn’t “stuck at 64%”. They chose not to electrify beyond 64% because it doesn’t make financial sense.
这确实值得骄傲,但我觉得跟别国的比较要持保留态度。只有线路流量足够大时,电气化才有意义;如果一天只有一趟车,那搞电气化纯属浪费钱。日本极大概率不是“停滞”在 64%,而是他们主动选择不继续推进,因为在经济上不划算。

At an aggregate level, China does have immense traffic. But how much traffic do they have on the lines which haven't been electrified? Most likely, minimal.

The gensets you are referring to are not for traction. Fully AC trains use generator cars (EOG - End on Generation) to provide reliable power for air conditioning, lighting, and pantry services, independent of the locomotive's traction power.

That is also now used only in case of emergency. Normally all the LHB trains get their power from HOG (Head on generation) equipment fitted in WAP 7 locos
