I know some smaller local people have talked about it but I have not seen any large scale national politicians talking about it. I want the adoption process in the US to be improved. I know good people capable of raising and wanting to adopt a child for whatever number of reasons, but it is cost prohibitive. The cost of adoption in the US can vary but a common average I see, it is around 20,000 (some of the average costs I have seen put it at 70k).
I know good people capable of raising a child that want to adopt but that do not have 20k available just to adopt a child. Imagine how much good that 20k could do for the child in their life. All the things that could provide for them in their life, or imagine that going into a college fund when they are born. How much the kid could benefit from that.
I want reforms to the system to make it easier to adopt and to provide greater credits for the adoption process to make it cheaper for people.

Eh, adoption has been fraught with a lot of coercion and child trafficking over the years. One of the reasons I think we have so much anti-choice legislation and social pressures combined with underfunding social services is to coerce "undesirable" parents to give up children to "good Christian couples."
Adoption, you have to ask, is it for the benefit of the child or for an infertile couple to fulfill a dream. I think it's for the child and needs to be in the child's best interest.
One of the reasons costs are rising is that we've made efforts to shutdown exploitative international adoption.

Okay, but is it in a childs best interest to never be adopted and have a support structure with loving parents? Or for them to just become an adult, have no real clear family and just be on their own?
The whole "good Christian couple" thing kind of falls apart when it becomes unreasonable for good parents to raise kids and there are means besides a cost barrier to ensure that kids are going to a good home. Support those means instead of just creating preventative costs.

I'm adopted, and the only reason I was put up for adoption was because my parents could not afford to keep me. And while I adore my adopted parents and they have given me every advantage that a child could wants, have been supportive of me as an adult, sometimes you should just give the money to the parents to keep their child.
I see this a lot with foster care as well. Some kids are just removed because their parents are poor. Their parents can't afford to feed them... So instead the government pay foster parents to watch the kid, instead of helping out the actual parents

A thorough effective screening is absolutely necessary and should in no way be compromised. But that cost need not be as high as it is, nor as passed onto the prospective parents as it is. I do not know what the exact right answer is, i would leave that conclusion to people FAR more versed in the subject than I. But I will not accept that our current method is the optimal one possible nor that it cannot be improved greatly to allow more kids to get adopted to good homes and live better, more fullfilling lives with parental figures that care for them and provide for them.

Lowering the age that retirees can work while collecting social security retirement benefits without it affecting their benefit amount. Right now full retirement age is 67 but you have to wait until you are 70 to not let extra income effect your SS retirement benefits. Today the average retirement check from SS is $1657/month. That’s not enough to live on, even before taxes are taken out. If a 67 year old retiree wants to work at Walmart to supplement their income, why should their benefits be reduced? I think our elderly are poorly taken care of.

A lot of states have really harsh standards for qualifying for a PD in criminal cases too. Like, nuke your savings and go into a year plus of hardship to try to get off because you can technically afford counsel. So if you're innocent, you've already been heavily punished because you had to pony up.
In my county, 52% of households live paycheck to paycheck, but only 14% are poverty level. Those 14% are really the ones who get PDs.

Here's one: how are we supposed to address the ever-increasing load on the power grid that things like electric cars are going to inevitably cause as we move away from fossil fuels?
Even if we get past our irrational fear of nuclear, we need to upxe our infrastructure to account for the increased usage.
Edit: another one that no one would dare to campaign on, why cant property tax be based on the value of the property at time of purchase? And then the money gained from sale can be taxed, like we do with literally any other asset?

I work with companies in the energy sector that maintain and operate the power grid: they’re actively working on this problem.
The biggest issue has to do with energy storage. It used to be that if you needed more energy in the short term, a power plant could burn more coal. You can’t just “turn up” the production on a solar farm or a wind farm because they’re constrained by the weather. So the question becomes: how do we store energy produced when there is excess so that we have it when there is a shortage? Small scale storage (like a Tesla power wall for your house and solar panels) exists, but on the industrial scale there’s really no good solution yet. It’s actively being worked on, but we aren’t there yet.
The government needs to step in to invest in further research as well as mandate a national power grid. Right now we effectively have lots of smaller, regional power grids and this is a highly flawed approach (ex. Texas the other year when they had snow storms and their power grid failed)

Because in the U.S. property taxes usually go to localities, and capital gains taxes usually go to the federal government.
Localities need a consistent and predicable income stream because their sources of income are much narrower. What you're proposing would cause localities all sorts of budget planning nightmares, because they can't control when houses sell. And property taxes based on the purchase price means that localities' income streams would diminish every year, and they wouldn't have a good way to boost that stream without increasing other taxes.

Edit: another one that no one would dare to campaign on, why cant property tax be based on the value of the property
at time of purchase?
And then the money gained from sale can be taxed, like we do with literally any other asset?
Because in the U.S. property taxes usually go to localities, and capital gains taxes usually go to the federal government.
Localities need a consistent and predicable income stream because their sources of income are much narrower. What you're proposing would cause localities all sorts of budget planning nightmares, because they can't control when houses sell. And property taxes based on the purchase price means that localities' income streams would diminish every year, and they wouldn't have a good way to boost that stream without increasing other taxes.

Here's one: how are we supposed to address the ever-increasing load on the power grid that things like electric cars are going to inevitably cause as we move away from fossil fuels?
A major part of the bipartisan infrastructure plan that was passed last year actually directly addresses upgrading the power grid to handle increased loads from electric vehicles.
another one that no one would dare to campaign on, why cant property tax be based on the value of the property at time of purchase?
This is essentially how it works in California and it's something of a disaster. A lot of people in California can't afford to move, even to a home that's both cheaper and superior to their current home, because it would result in a giant increase to their property tax.

Locally its crime and infrastructure. I live in a town of 32,000 since I moved here in late 2018 we've had over 20 murders. All but one were shooting related. We've had 13 of those murders in the past 14 months. 2 of which have happened in the past couple of weeks. An alarming amount of those were random. Next up is infrastructure. The town loves to pump money into the more affluent side of town but barely puts any into the more minority dominate parts. I shouldn't be dodging craters on my way to work. Both of these I've contacted the town council about and got crickets. As for the state level the economy, make people want to invest in Kentucky. A long shot would be the government dealing with all the corruption within. I guess I hope Kentucky passes the bill that would make animal torture a felony. I hate that I seen someone intentionally run over a dog and get away with it. As for national there are a lot of people at risk of losing or getting barriers placed in front of their rights. More should be done to secure them and to prevent it from happening.

This is actually a big priority right now in space policy and space technology circles, but almost *never* gets mentioned in the political sphere: Space weather.
We came dangerously close in 2012 to a Carrington Class solar storm hitting the earth which would have caused catastrophic damage to our electrical system and satellite grid, which affects everything from television broadcast to US Naval communications, and yet while the issue is important enough that FEMA, the Department of Defense, NOAA, NASA, the US Geological Survey, and other agencies are concerned about it and have programs running to research the problem, politicians seem unlikely to care much about it, or if they do, almost never talk about it publicly.
Heck, it's enough of a problem that a solar storm recently downed 40 SpaceX satellites two weeks ago, and yet pretty much nobody in elected office really talks about it.

Yeah hardening critical infrastructure against electromagnetic events should be a matter of national security. There could be catastrophic economic impacts from an event even close to the carrington event

Housing.
I would argue the recent housing market price explosion is the single biggest issue affecting the most people in America. And it's barely discussed in the media or by politicians.
To me the "American Dream" is the ability for a middle class/working class person to buy/own a house. For anyone 40ish or younger this is increasing becoming unattainable in most markets in America.
The America Dream is dying and it get little to no coverage

Housing market price increases for the most part only influence renters and people in the market for a home (especially first time homeowners). People who already own homes enjoy the rapid appreciation of their assets.
This is why it's not a terribly salient issue in America. Too many people "have theirs" and the only solution to the housing crisis is actively working on making the homes of those people who have theirs less valuable.

Yep. Rent in my area's gone up by north of 15% this year, and over 30% in the last three years
There's a lot of talk about stagnant wages vs rising cost, but a lot of those rising cost have a lot to do with our housing policy and addressing that is nearly as important (or maybe as important) as pushing for increased wages
