Puripant Ruchikachorn, lived in Tokyo
I grew up in Bangkok, lived in Tokyo for 3 years, was in Seoul for 6 months (actually Incheon but I went to Seoul on weekly basis), was in Shanghai for 3 months, and have visited all other cities for about a week at least once.
In general, it’s hard to compare cities and people tend to be biased. (I think I am a little biased toward Bangkok; I live in the city now.) It depends a lot on your experience and the purpose of your visit.

· If it’s your first time in Asia, Tokyo will impress anyone. Its sheer size. Most people know Japanese food and are familiar with a form of Japanese culture: food, manga/anime, Jpop, etc.
· If you have visited a city in East Asia, you should go to Bangkok. Unfortunately, many modern Asian cities can feel a bit similar. Because Bangkok is the only city on the list that is not in East Asia, it’s the most different from the others. Its temples are beautiful.

·If you plan to stay for a few months, it’s pretty hard to live in Tokyo, Seoul, and most cities in China without knowing local languages. I think Shanghai is the friendliest for expats, especially westerners. Bangkok and Hong Kong come in a close second.
· If you are into grand/historical tourist attractions, no city on the list can beat Beijing.
· If you are into modern/cool stuff, Seoul and Shanghai are on the cutting edge. This is debatable but I feel like Tokyo has lost its cool edge for a bit and Hong Kong is gaining.
· If you like exploring hidden gems, Taipei and Bangkok have plenty of them. Somehow these two cities don’t get mentioned much in western media, at least in English. They are also cheaper than the rest. You may need to look beyond English guidebooks; Japanese ones are pretty good alternatives (if you can read Japanese, of course.)

·If you like taking photos, the city life in Tokyo and Hong Kong is very photogenic but the old stuff in Beijing or Bangkok is more iconic.
· If you like the hustle and bustle of big cities, Tokyo, Taipei, or Seoul may not really feel like that. It’s hard to explain but these three cities are too neat. They are huge but they don’t feel city-like or, to be more precise, like New York or Chicago. Tokyo is definitely more like a gigantic well-maintained machine but not a spontaneous ad-hoc beautiful mess like New York. The backstreets of Seoul may still give you that impression but people of Hong Kong and Bangkok do breathe like that.
· If you like food, you can go to any cities on the list. They all have great restaurants.
· If you like food and you plan to stay for a long period of time, food in Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Bangkok is more diverse. Tokyo can be great for some types of food (burger or steak) but horrible for others (Chinese and Italian food!)
· If you … I can go on forever.

Krystal Xu, lived in Singapore (2004-2015)

I was born in Shanghai, moved to Singapore when I was 8 and lived there for more than a decade. I also traveled to Hong Kong, Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul, and Taipei (I’ve been to Bangkok once but I was too young to remember much).
Beijing: more focused on Chinese traditional arts and culture. Great Wall, and palaces are there, together with its iconic hutong. There’s also signature dishes like Peking duck and palace cuisine. There is a bustling startup scene too which is really cool.

Shanghai: arguably more prosperous than Beijing. While Beijing is the political powerhouse, Shanghai is more of the central financial hub where lots of foreign investments flow in. Go to Pudong and you will see many big name banks and other financial institutions setting foot there. You also get to witness colonial legacies in terms of architecture like The Bund (stunning at night!)
Singapore: Singapore is the cleanest, greenest and most organized city out of all these. It’s also called a city-state because it is a city and also a state. It is close to the tropics and hence the trees there resemble the species that can be found in rainforests. Singapore is slightly more expensive than China but the street food is very affordable and unique! Singapore is a multi-racial society (its race issues are a lot less strained than America’s though) and hence you will get to enjoy Chinese (and there’s cantonese, haka, hokkien subgroups), malay and indian food all at once. There’s also indigenous culture called Peranakan which I personally find very intriguing.

Tokyo: I LOVE JAPANESE FOOD SO MUCH. Try its omakase, go to Tsukiji market etc. Tokyo Disney Sea is also amazing. The metro system is very efficient but can get a little too complicated because it’s a vast network. I had difficulty navigating coz the command of English of the Japanese is really not as good as the other cities, but the excellent service and constant courtesy make up for that. There’s also a great deal of funky culture, from anime to maid cafe to Harajuku style. Tokyo is an amazing destination for food, culture and attractions!

Seoul: Korea is really known for its cosmetic brands. You will find affordable and good cosmetic shops everywhere. I also love Korean food, from kbbq to ginseng chicken soup. Myeongdong is an amazing paradise for everything! Also there’s historically significant places to visit such as the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) and the Korean War museums. There are hidden cute cafes. If you are into k-pop and k-drama, you can learn from me and plan a list of cafes opened by k-pop stars or scenes that have appeared in k dramas :)

Taipei: I really love Taipei for its emphasis on books and culture. Out of all these cities, Taipei is the one city that still retains a strong reading culture. It has a famous bookstore chain called ChengPin which is popular amongst people. It also has a strong street food culture and be sure to visit its night market!
HongKong: HK is known for its dimsum and yumcha. The DisneyLand was too small and boring. The people there are not as courteous as those from the other cities and you don’t get treated as well as the natives if you don’t speak Cantonese. The islands around HK such as Llama Island are charming though.

Bangkok: BKK has so much cheap stuff from food to clothes! It has an eclectic mix of high fashion and affordable apparel. It also has great street food but take note of hygiene. Two of my friends came down with stomach flu from it. It has an emerging cafe culture and there are cafes that are really quaint and cute! I haven’t been to BKK for a long time so what I comment is mostly from what I have heard from friends.

I've been to Tokyo, Seoul, Hongkong and Bangkok, and I've lived in Shanghai, so my answer will only involve the aforementioned cities.
5th place: Seoul
Seoul is really cool city. They have some really interesting sites and museums, and the food is outstanding. One thing that you really should not leave South Korea without trying is Korean BBQ, I promise you it is worth a try!
4th place: Bangkok
Of all the cities on the list, Bangkok has the best food. Thai food in general is one of my favoritt cuisines, so that one is a no-brainer. Additionally, this city is very underrated in terms of shopping. They have this vintage market where you can buy really cool stuff, as well as some really cool shopping malls.

3rd place: Hong Kong
Hong Kong has a really vibrant vibe. There are some really cool places to visit, and you always feel like there is a lot going on in the city. The transportation system is really good as well, and a lot of people speak English, so it is quite easy to navigate through the city as well. However the city, everything from accommodation to food and so on, is quite expensive (and trust me, I am Norwegian, so I know what expensive means. Furthermore, because there is such an ethnical diversity among people there, you somehow feel like you are not in an authentic Asian city (if that makes any sense to you).

2nd place: Shanghai
Of all the cities I′ve been to in Mainland China, Shanghai is the coolest one. There is so much going on, and so much to see. You can go an area called the French Concession with really European-like restaurants and bars, to other parts of the city where you have an authentic Chinese vibe. The skyline is quite good as well, and the public transport system, especially the metro, is impressive! Statistically, a very safe city as well! One thing that is a drawback for some people is the lack of English speakers to help you around. For me however, that just adds to the whole Asian experience. And if you are travelling with a group of people (4+) then I would highly recommend you to check out KTV (karaoke-bars).

1st place: Tokyo
For me, Tokyo is the best city by far. I would actually go as far as saying that it is the best city I've ever been to. There is so much to do, and so much to see. Just feeling the vibe of the city when walking down the street is in itself worth the trip. The Japanese culture is definitely something I recommend everyone to experience first-hand. Everything from Akihabara with its really cool arcades and anime-shops, to Harajuku, which is a Japanese version of a hipster-area, to all the temples and shrines. Everything about this city is awesome. However, in addition to being expensive, if you really like your spices and flavorful food, this city might be a disappointment in that aspect. However, if you love sushi, be careful, because you might not ever want to leave Tokyo!
These are my recommendations based on my own experiences, and I hope you enjoyed reading them!

Albert Ho
I have visited all those cities for at least a few days. Since I haven’t truly lived in any except Beijing and Taipei, I am only going to describe my experiences as a tourist, and what a tourist might except.
Bangkok
Bangkok is the warmest and most humid. It has a tropical climate all year round, and can rain very heavily unexpectedly. Without air conditioning, it takes at least a few days for a visitor to get accustomed to the weather. Thai tourist spots are quite exploitative. Expect scams, markups, inferior goods, and crime of all types. There isn’t a lot of non-Thai food that is easy to find except at the Western fast-food chains, and most touristy restaurants have adjusted their flavor to appeal to Western tastes. There are a lot of places to shop, but most are not unique and it’s easy to overpay. Going on a tour group organized by a respectable company is definitely the best way to explore Bangkok and Thailand.

Beijing
Beijing is very hot in the summer and very cold in the winter. Summer rains can be very heavy. While clear days are more common now than 10 years ago, the city is still the most polluted of the bunch. Beijing has a lot of tourist attractions. There are also a lot of hidden gems that are much harder to find than similar places in Shanghai. Property crime and pickpocketing is common, usually by outsiders. While not as lively as at night as Seoul, there are lots of 24 hour restaurants, bars, and other establishments. Food is very varied and usually of moderate cost. Beijing has become more expensive than Taipei recently. Shopping is average, and the touristy places can overcharge massively. It is probably best to explore the city through a travel agency.

Hong Kong
Warm, humid, and rainy over the summer. Temperate over the winter. The city has the least tourist attractions, and is the densest. Hong Kong is safer than any mainland city, but still has some crime. Nightlife is great, and it’s easy to see all of the popular urban attractions in a few days. Shopping is fun, but not really different than what’s found in most large cities. Food is very good and varied, and it’s possible and even preferable to travel alone. There are a lot of activities to do in nature, since most of the island is undeveloped due to zoning laws.
