How do I get Britain to return the cultural relics it has seized?

Easy.
Collapse their economy, to do this you just carry on as normal.
The UK economy is heading for massive massive shocks. Once they are in the shit, well they’re going to have less wiggle room.
I mean fuck me, I left in 2017 and a can of coke was 45–50p? I checked tesco’s website and it’s £1.55. They’ve pretty much gone through a tripling of prices in 7 years?
While that’s not hyperinflation it’s still pretty fucking bad.

Ernest W. Adams
YOU don't. If the country from which the relic came wants it back, its government will ask for it.
Lately the idea has spread that everything in the British Museum is stolen. This is not true, but only professionals are informed enough to know the difference. Random members of the general public who try to repatriate artifacts can, at best, only make a nuisance of themselves. Leave it to the pros.

You don’t

The only cultural relics Britain has seized are those suspected of being involved in a crime. An essential part of the Investigation is always to identify the legal owner, and it is to the legal owner alone that the goods can be returned after investigation and/or prosecution. The state has no remit or budget for permanent retention.

Mike McGuire
I don’t think an individual like you can achieve the obxtive on your own. The best strategy might be to join a political party and agitate for the changes you seek.

Why don’t you try to get other countries to do the same? The Louvre is packed with stuff Napoleon had stolen to order, with not even a vestige of a purchase or gift - his people stripped Venice by force, and France never seems to be urged to return even a fraction of it. An international agreement with an agreed basis for judging what could or should be returned and in what circumstances might just work.

Bob Muir
You mean cultural artifacts that were bought, given as gifts or found and saved from destruction?

Frederick Crouch
You would have to be proved they had been seized, and not purchased legitimately from a curio shop.

Andy Jarvis
First of all it's got nothing to do with you. Secondly how can I get China and other such countries to return cultural relics they have seized?

Gordian Nott
How far back does this “returning items seized go back”?! So the UK had the biggest empire for a time, so what!? Rome once had a huge empire, Holland etc. They will have taken items from countries they invaded etc. How far back in history do you go? Shall we say 1000BC? That’s going to be a lot of items being handed around, what about land, do we give that back!?

Graham Moore
Britain is not the only country in the world to have taken cultural relics from other countries. Your question should therfore be broader.
Britain has, unlike many other countries, already returned a number of cultural relics already.

Keith Allum
Let's see… you could present an itemised list, that would be a start.
You see we have quite a lot of them and many of the original documents have been mislaid.

PS
The problem with all such blanket claims of the ‘Britain stole everything’ sort is - unsurprisingly - there are no end of ‘claimants’ AKA ‘con artists’ who either sincerely believe whatever anyone else possesses, they must inevitably have come by dishonestly or at least can simulate the pose of outraged amour prop to professional criminal standards sufficient to make a dishonest living.
Of whom a good number conversely affect to sincerely believe that they, and they alone, are uniquely placed to decide who is to fence the loot, and so earn an appropriately generous finder's fee.
One they will, in criminal court, swear blind they thought was entirely honestly come by…

Alan Furness
So more anti-British racism.
Which cultural relics?
At the time they were acquired there were no laws prohibiting removal from their countries of origin and many were sold to the UK, and other places, by the leaders of those countries of origin. There is also the question of time. How many generations does one wait before trying to claim back an allegedly stolen item? one? five? ten? Is it right to punish the descendants of those who acquired the items?
Should one recompense Britain for the the large amounts of money spent on developing and implementing the techniques required to clean, display and preserve historical artefacts?
Are the countries to which they are being returned able to store and preserve them properly? If not then sending them back is putting these artefacts at risk.
It is a ridiculous idea.

Bob Janes
I'd say:
Identify your cultural relic.
Work out in what way it was illegally taken.
Work out who it was taken from
Work out who has the strongest claim to own it now.
Show how they will protect and look after the relic as well as it is currently kept.
Persuade the UK public that returning the relic is the right thing to do.

Frankie King
Try paying us for the legally bought ones and storage/preservation for all.
Pay your own transport too

Who are you that makes you think you may have any influence over what the UK either will or will not do?
